COURSES

September 11

And now what? You’ve finished your pilot or spec. The draft is saved on your computer (and backed up in ump-teen places, just in case of hard drive failure, theft, or an act of God). Now is the time for eyes other than yours to read the script. As the author, you can only catch so much. Script University is proud to offer this Advanced Television Rewriting course, where an established screenwriter will look over your ENTIRE screenplay and give you tips on how to polish it.

Course Dates: 9/11/2025 - 11/6/2025

We all want to be better storytellers. We all watch movies. What better way to maximize your time than to learn to do both at the same time?

In this 10-week course, we’ll take you through some of the master filmmakers and writers of the past—Alfred Hitchcock, William Goldman, George Lucas, Edgar Wright, Steven Spielberg, and more—and give you a peek behind the curtain of their work and how they crafted stories.

Course Dates: 9/11/2025 - 11/20/2025

September 18

Let Dave Trottier (Dr. Format himself) show you the necessary techniques and currently accepted standards that will set your script apart from the heap. Not only will he teach you the rules of script formatting, he will show you when and how to break them. By applying Dave’s formatting techniques, you will write more compelling description and sharper dialogue. That’s because formatting is not just a box to dump your story into but part of the story itself—it’s a writing tool that will enhance your story and help you create a reader-friendly screenplay. The course includes four lessons and several exercises to sharpen your skills. In addition, Dave will provide a complete critique of your three-page writing sample.

Course Dates: 09/18/2025 - 10/16/2025

September 25

Story Development and Outlining with Lynn Grant Beck

This course will examine plotting a screenplay from premise to story. You'll learn how to take your screenplay from the early stages of building an idea to a full story, ways to structure the story to keep tension and investment high, and strategies to build not only structure but texture in the world of your film. You'll work to discover how to create an experience of the world, including what the events and the world of the story mean for characters and audience alike, rather than just building up a point-by-point plot.

Course Dates: 09/25/2025 - 10/23/2025

With successful short film examples to watch and study, as well as real-world advice from the low-budget filmmaking trenches, this 4-week class will lead you through the process of writing a short film you can produce on a budget, as well as touch on the pre-production, production, and post-production process. Lastly, you’ll learn techniques to get your film out into the world through film festivals, traditional distribution deals, and online distribution models that you can do yourself.

Course Dates: 09/25/2025 - 10/23/2025

LIVE EVENTS

Outlines are arguably one of the most important aspects of screenwriting, and also one of the most under valued. Anyone who reads scripts for their job (agents, managers, producers, script competition judges) can tell if a writer has completed a solid outline within the first fifteen pages of their script. The differences are that obvious, and that significant.

This live webinar will explore why an outline matters so much, what risks you take by not diving into one, and offer helpful tips and advice on making the most of the time you spend prior to launching into ‘page one’. You will leave this webinar empowered to explore your idea in whatever outline format suits you best. You will gain an appreciation for the outline, you will write better outlines, which will lead to better scripts, immediately.
