Bite Size Oscar History: Foreign Language Films Nominated for Best Picture

Which non-English language film was the first to nab the top prize for Best Picture?

Every so often, a foreign language film will crossover into the Best Picture category at the Oscars. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Minari (2020), Drive My Car (2021), All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), and Parasite (2019) are a few.

Parasite (2019)

Bong Joon-ho's black comedy Parasite (2019) received six nominations and took home the golden statuette for four categories at the 92nd Academy Awards - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film. This was the first time a non-English language film nabbed the top prize for Best Picture.

This year, controversial Spanish-language Emilia Pérez (France) and I’m Still Here, which is in Portuguese, (Brazil) have received the honor of being nominated for Best Picture. Competition is stiff this year in this category. Good luck to all nominees!
