As writers, we spend countless hours focusing on perfecting our craft, as we should. But far too often, we don't create a strategy to get our stories in front of agents.
Wait! We have to pitch to agents?
Don't worry, it's not as daunting as you think!
When I began writing, the thought of pitching an agent terrified me, but I knew I had to face those fears, or my work would forever sit on my hard drive. I started by sending queries, but most went unnoticed, or were immediately deleted. I needed a better way to get in front of them, allowing them to see my passion for my work.
Then, I discovered WDC's Pitch Slam. I went to my first in 2007 and bombed, but I learned so much about telling my story in a succinct way. Three weeks later, I was so inspired that I hopped on a plane to L.A. to another pitching event. Since then, I've pitched hundreds of executives, created a robust network, and can now pitch anywhere and everywhere, without dripping a bead of sweat.
I urge you to take the leap, come to NYC and see for yourself.
If you're still nervous, allow me to tell you a little secret: Those "scary" agents truly want to find a great story and a talented writer to team up with. They want to be able to say "yes" ... but if you don't show up, they'll never be able to discover you.
Invest in your career. Invest in yourself. I promise, pitching can be fun! We gather the agents, so you can simply focus on telling them your story.
Plus, there's also a screenwriting track!
See you at WDC!
