November 2013
Spec Market Scorecard
The phrase of the day is: Big finish. Not only has this month’s spec market been on a tear, posting the highest number of November spec script sales since we started tracking five years ago (not including the 10th sale of the month this week), but check out the year-over-year numbers for the past five months, below. 2013 has had:
- The biggest July since 2007;
- The second biggest August since 2007;
- The biggest September since 2007 (tied with 2012); and
- The second biggest October since 2007.
So despite our hand-wringing over most of the studios not buying enough screenplays all year (oh, by the way, laggards Paramount and Sony both bought two scripts each in the past four weeks), we’re only off about 15% from 2011’s and 2012’s record highs. That’s not too shabby, and we should still see another handful of sales in December once the 2013 Black List comes out.
Keep up the good work, Hollywood.

About The Scoggins Report:
The Scoggins Report is a terribly unscientific analysis of the feature film development business based on information assembled from a variety of public and non-public sources. The numbers in the reports are by no means official statistics. Caveat emptor.
