February 2014
Spec Market Scorecard

February’s spec script sales numbers may be on the low end of the past six February’s
we’ve tracked, but let’s focus on the bright side, shall we? Thanks to January’s
strong numbers, the spec market is off to its 2nd best start to the year since the
WGA strike.

Conventional wisdom (with which we agree, fwiw) suggests strong sales ahead for at
least the next month or so. The numbers don’t quite show it yet, but the studios seem to
have an increased appetite for spec material already this year, as evidenced by a
handful of bidding wars for hot properties last month. The most recent deal (the seven
figure sale of “Winter’s Knight” to Sony) closed over the weekend, which is why it’s not
in the below grids.

There will be enough data starting next month to have more interesting analysis. In the
meantime, get out there and win, Hollywood.
