The Marilyn Horowitz / PANO Screenwriting Award

This award is intended to support a promising Woman, Non-binary screenwriter with a strong original voice to reach the next level. It is our aim that this $5000 unrestricted cash prize will propel the writer forward in their craft and career, awarded by Marilyn Horowitz.

Marilyn Horowitz together with PANO (formerly NYC Women Filmmakers), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting filmmakers, announce The Marilyn Horowitz / PANO Screenwriting Award. This award is intended to support a promising Woman, Non-binary screenwriter with a strong original voice to reach the next level. It is our aim that this $5000 unrestricted cash prize will propel the writer forward in their craft and career, awarded by Marilyn Horowitz. Applicants must have written at least two completed feature film screenplays.

The admission fee includes 1 full year of membership to the PANO Network - with all of their job listings, events and networking. Submissions are open through January 31st, 2023.

  • Submissions will be accepted through January 31st, 2023.
  • 3 Winners will be announced on April 1, 2023.
  • Weather and safety permitting, we will host the Winners at an awards event in NYC in May 2023.
  • All selections are the decision of the judging committee and are final.

About MARILYN HOROWITZ

Marilyn Horowitz is an award-winning author, New York University professor, TV show creator, and writing coach, working with successful novelists, produced screenwriters, and award-winning filmmakers. Two of her mentees have been nominated for an Emmy, and a third won a Peabody. Horowitz received the coveted New York University Award for Teaching Excellence in 2004 and has an active online audience comprising 5,000 Facebook friends, over 10,000 connections on LinkedIn, and 2,500 readers of her weekly blog. Since 1998, she has taught hundreds of aspiring writers to complete their feature-length screenplays, novels, and TV pilots using her trademarked writing method, The Horowitz System®. Horowitz has also written five books on screenwriting, two of which are used as textbooks at New York University. Recently, she served as associate producer of “Hunter Is F**cked,” an award-winning comedy short based on the life of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, winning Best Dark Comedy (Texas Short Film Festival) and Best Ensemble Cast (Austin Comedy Film Festival). Marilyn is currently serving as a judge for the Big Apple Film Festival in the narrative-feature-film category. Marilyn volunteers her time as an Advisory Board member and co-chair of the Writer’s Group in the Flobel Academy, an arm of The Florence Belsky Charitable Foundation. Horowitz is passionate about helping aspiring creatives launch their writing careers, and since 2021 has been holding webinars to share her unique creativity-and-time-management technique, The Word of the Day Practice.
