It’s hard to believe that the Oscars category for Best Animated Feature has only been around since 2002. Prior to that, animated films won in other categories like Best Short Subject (Cartoon) or Best Picture. DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek (2001) directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, with the screenplay written by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman, and Roger S.H. Schulman, won at the 74th Academy Awards. “Shrek” is the Yiddish word for monster but who knew this particular one would be so lovable.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz were just some of the star power that voiced the legendary characters based on William Steig’s 1990 book Shrek!

Shrek was a box office wonder, amassing almost $500 million globally.
