September 2013

Spec Market Scorecard

As you’ll see, the spec market has set a steady (if slow-ish) pace as we transition from Summer into Fall. The year’s most visible trend has been steady as well -- all of September’s 8 spec sales so far have been purchased by non-studio buyers.

We’ll steel ourselves to compare Q4 year-over-year sales numbers in next month’s Spec Market Scorecard. In the meantime, we’ll leave you with this comparison of the studios’ collective purchasing pattern compared to that of 2013’s non-studio buyers:

  • So far in 2013, the studios have collectively bought fewer than 50% of the spec scripts they bought in 2012 (28 through September 21, compared to 57 total last year). Universal remains the biggest studio buyer with 5 so far, and 2nd place is a three way tie between CBS Films, Lionsgate and Relativity, with 3 each. At this point last year, 6 studios had bought 6 each.
  • The opposite is true of 2013’s other buyers: The non-studio buyers that have purchased specs this year have collectively bought more than twice as many as they did last year (58 through September 21, vs 25 total in 2012). BCDF is in the lead with 5 so far, and 2nd place is a two-way tie between Thunder Road and Voltage, with 4 each. At this point last year, 3 non-studio buyers had picked up 3 or more specs.

2013 Overall Numbers

Of 2013‘s 85 spec sales, 12 (14%) have been of scripts that originally went out prior to 2012. Here are the overall spec market numbers through September 21...

* For 2010 and 2011, sales of scripts that originally went to market in years prior are not distributed monthly in the above table but have been added to the year-end totals.

About The Scoggins Report:

The Scoggins Report is a terribly unscientific analysis of the feature film development business based on information assembled from a variety of public and non-public sources. The numbers in the reports are by no means official statistics. Caveat emptor.
